QoLEAD- Quality of life by using AI in dementia

We are proud that the JAIN coalition is the founder of the QoLEAD project (Quality of life by using AI in dementia), which has been honored within the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant (KIC) for the call ‘Living with Dementia’ .

In the QoLEAD project, JAIN TIGNL will collaborate with TU/e, Alzheimer Nederland, ACL, Radboud University, TUDelft, TNO, UMCG, Fontys HS, UT/Tranzo, Rotterdam HS, UU, Vilans, Avoord, Zonnehuisgroep Amstelland, TanteLouise , SVRZ Service Centre, UMCN/UKON and CZ.

Within the QoLEAD project, we conduct research aimed at improving the quality of life for people with dementia and their environment, using artificial intelligence (AI). In this project, the needs and wishes of people with dementia are central, and we will work with them on innovations in crucial areas of life such as social contact, safety, meaning and personal autonomy. Artificial intelligence can help in part while it can learn and adapt to different individuals in a variety of contexts. In this way, AI can support better and better people along the way and increase their well-being. Think, for example, of instruments that help people with memory complaints to follow everyday things, or of a navigation aid that learns about the meaningful locations in the immediate vicinity of a person with dementia and can offer support.

An important goal of the project is to bring people from healthcare and the world of AI together. We want to bridge the gap between healthcare professionals who know everything about dementia and researchers who understand algorithms. The intention is that we search together in a process of co-creation and co-design for solutions that really work. Artificial intelligence is partly a means and not an end in itself – it does not necessarily always offer the only or best solution. We look at what people with dementia need, both at home and in a care environment. In addition, we take into account how healthcare professionals work in practice, and which technical innovations are best for passengers there. People with dementia and informal carers steer these innovations in an open network of practical locations, knowledge institutions and companies with the ultimate impact of a better quality of life.

Care solutions
The QoLEAD project will harness the power of AI to deliver fit, warm, lean healthcare solutions across three core domains:

  1. Health, safety, quality of care;
  2. Social participation and social contact
  3. Autonomy, meaning, self-respect.

People with dementia and informal carers steer these innovations in an open network of practical locations, knowledge institutions and companies with the ultimate impact of a better quality of life.

QoLead is confirmed by supported by NWO/ZonMW and Alzheimer Nederland and is led from TU/e by the Expertise Center for Dementia and Technology
